How to Wear Asymmetrical Earrings (and Why Mismatched Is the Point)

There's beauty in imperfection, and when it's intentional, it's fashion. That's the whole idea behind asymmetrical earrings: two earrings that belong together without being identical.

If you've never worn a mismatched pair, here's how to make it look deliberate.

1. Keep one thread connecting both sides

The trick to asymmetry is repetition. Choose pairs that share a metal, a color or a shape. In my Medusa's Alchemy earrings, both sides share a goldstone bead and the same lever-back, then split into a Medusa coin on one ear and a horn on the other. Your eye reads them as a pair, and the difference becomes the detail people notice.

2. Put the bigger piece where you want attention

Wear the larger or more detailed earring on the side you part your hair or the side you're photographed from. Tuck your hair behind that ear and let the smaller earring play backup.

3. Stack, don't match

Charm hoops are made for this. The Saltwater Spell earrings carry the same ocean talismans (a cobalt evil eye, a CZ fish and a baroque freshwater pearl) arranged differently on each hoop, so each side tells its own story.

4. Mind your neckline

Asymmetrical earrings love a clean neckline: crewnecks, turtlenecks, a bare collarbone. If you're wearing a statement necklace, keep it in the same metal so the whole look feels pulled together.

5. Commit to it

The only way mismatched earrings look like a mistake is if you look unsure. Wear them on purpose, and they'll read as personal style.

Shop the look

Both asymmetrical pairs are 18k gold-filled and hand-assembled in Miami. Pair them with their matching charm necklace and save 15% on the set.
